  • 2021 Lucy Hobbs Taylor Award Goes To Dr. Valerie A. Murrah

    THE AMERICAN ASSOCIATION OF WOMEN DENTISTS ANNOUNCES 2021 LUCY HOBBS TAYLOR AWARD RECIPIENT DR. VALERIE A. MURRAH

    The American Association of Women Dentists (AAWD) is proud to announce Valerie A. Murrah, DMD, MA Ed, MS, MBA, as the recipient of the Lucy Hobbs Taylor Award, the organization’s top honor.

    In an academic career that spans 38 years, Dr. Murrah has been a pioneer oral health educator. She obtained her Doctor of Dental Medicine degree from Southern Illinois University School of Dental Medicine. Her academic career began following completion of a residency in Oral Pathology at the University of Minnesota, after which, she joined the faculty.

    Following her tenure on the faculty at the University of MN, Dr. Murrah accepted a position in the Department of Pathology at the University of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio where she continued her achievements in education and research, winning multiple teaching awards, including the prestigious Presidential Teaching Excellence Award.

    After a productive period of teaching and research at San Antonio, Dr. Murrah was hired by the Department of Pathology of Emory University School of Medicine, where she ultimately became Director of Research for the Division of Oral, Head and Neck Pathology.

    In 1998, Dr. Murrah was offered the position of Chair of Diagnostic Sciences and Director of Oral & Maxillofacial Pathology at the University of North Carolina and has been on the faculty there now for over 23 years. During this time, Dr. Murrah continued pioneering leadership. She has been the recipient of multiple teaching awards and instituted the graduate specialty program in Oral & Maxillofacial Pathology, resulting in the status of the University of North Carolina as one of only a handful of dental schools offering graduate programs in all recognized specialties of dentistry.

    Dr. Murrah was awarded the prestigious Richard F. Hunt, Jr. Award for Teaching Excellence in 2016, the ultimate teaching award at the UNC School of Dentistry. She was the first woman recipient to ever receive the award in the multiple decades of its existence. In 2016, she was also awarded Honorary Lifetime Membership by the UNC School of Dentistry Alumni Association.  She was elected the first woman president in 62 years of the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology, the examining body that awards diplomate status to successful candidates in the specialty! Dr. Murrah holds the distinction of having held the office of Vice President of the Intersociety Pathology Council, the collaborative organization of all pathology organizations in the US and Canada, the only dentist to have ever held such a position!

    Dr. Murrah is a strong advocate for women students and women professionals. Last year, she received the prestigious Four Corners Study Club Faculty Mentoring Award for outstanding mentorship of faculty over the years. She is currently working on an advising program for women faculty as mentors of women students.

    To provide balance between her intense professional involvement and her personal life, Dr. Murrah continues an involvement in competitive running. She has completed 101 full marathons, including a marathon in every state, a marathon in all the Canadian provinces and territories and a marathon on each of the 7 continents. She feels that it is important to inspire students to be involved in an active lifestyle.

    About the Award

    The Lucy Hobbs Taylor Award is the highest honor given by the AAWD and was first presented in 1983 honoring Lucy Hobbs Taylor for being the first woman to earn a doctorate in dentistry. AAWD presents this award to a member who exemplifies a true professional with accomplishment in one or more areas of dentistry, organized dentistry, academia, government, anthropology, archeology, philanthropy, and consulting. With at least 10 years membership in AAWD and a career as a licensed dentist for 20 years or more, the recipient demonstrates a record of mentoring women dentists and/or service to organizations that further the cause of women in dentistry.

  • Nominations are open for the 2022 Student Representative

    The American Association of Women Dentists is seeking one student representative for the 2022 AAWD Board. This is a one-year position. The student will represent the needs and interests of themselves, the chapters and dental students across the country to the board members.

    Student representatives must:

    • Be actively registered as a student at a recognized U.S. dental school.
    • Be a current member of the AAWD.
    • Be active in a recognized AAWD Student Chapter.
    • Attend monthly conference calls with the Board of Directors.

    To apply, please complete the following:

    • Complete this application for the Board Student Representative position by NOVEMBER 30, 2021, to be considered for this position.
    • Submit a video (2 minutes or less) telling us why you’d like to serve on the board of directors. Video submissions will be posted and voted on by AAWD student members electronically.
    • Attach a current resume and at least one letter of recommendation from a faculty member at your dental school.

    The American Association of Women Dentists is seeking candidates to serve two-year terms on the 2022-2023 AAWD Board. You may nominate yourself or someone else using this form. Multiple nominations are permitted. AAWD board members work together to advance women in dentistry. The Nominations Committee is currently seeking candidates who will bring wisdom, effectiveness, candor, and creative thinking to the board. In choosing nominees to develop the election slate, the Nominations Committee considers candidates’ backgrounds and experiences in five areas:

    1. Contributions to dentistry
    2. Strategic planning experience
    3. Leadership experience
    4. Experience assessing and administering finances
    5. Corporate relations experience

    The open board positions for this term are as follows: President Elect, Secretary/Treasurer, Director of Member Benefits, Director of Membership and Chapters, and Director of Academic Affairs. Please note that there is a partial travel stipend included for AAWD Board Members.

    The deadline for nominations is July 31, 2021.

    Nominations are now open for the AAWD 2021 Jeanne Hansen Bayless Federal Services Award and Uniformed Services Award, which recognize the lifetime achievements made by an AAWD member dentist in the federal services and uniformed services arenas.

    The AAWD Federal Services Award is presented to a woman dentist who has made outstanding achievements in the Federal Services arena as an advocate or dental officer and exhibits role model qualities that positively reflect the image of women dentists and commitment to the profession.

    The AAWD Uniformed Services Award is presented to a woman dentist who has made outstanding achievements in the federal services arena as a uniformed dental officer—Active Duty, Reserve, National Guard or Retired—from one of the seven uniformed services of United States: Army, Marine Corps, Navy, Air Force, Coast Guard, Public Health Service Commissioned Corps, or the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration Commissioned Officer Corps. The dentist must also exhibit role model qualities that positively reflect the image of women dentists and commitment to the profession.

    Nominations are now open for the AAWD 2021 Lucy Hobbs Taylor Award. In honor of Dr. Lucy Hobbs Taylor, the first woman to earn a doctorate in dentistry, the American Association of Women Dentists has presented the Lucy Hobbs Taylor Award for many years to an AAWD member who:

      • Is a willing example of a true professional and one who has a record of accomplishment in one or more areas of dentistry [for example, clinical dentistry (including fields of specialization), organized dentistry, academia, government, anthropology, archeology, philanthropy (includes community involvement), and consulting (for example, to the insurance industry)].
      • Has a record of at least 10 years membership in AAWD to include current membership, as verified by AAWD. (The AAWD membership must be stated on the resumé or CV with the exact years being claimed. AAWD Board of Directors are not eligible for the LHT Award unless it has been two years since they served on the AAWD Board of Directors.)
      • Has had a career as a licensed dentist for at least 20 years as stated on the resumé/CV to include jurisdiction and the exact years being claimed.
      • Has a record of mentoring women dentists and/or service to organizations that further the cause of women in dentistry.

     

     

    The Lucy Hobbs Taylor Award is the highest award given by our organization.     AAWD Bylaw Amendments Are Approved – Introducing the New International Membership Option!

     

    The Board of Directors recently met to discuss the organization’s strategic plan and to set goals for the future success of this dynamic group of professional women. The Board concluded that amendments to AAWD’s Bylaws are highly recommended in order to differentiate between the Affiliate and International memberships and their separate roles. As an AAWD member in good standing, you unanimously voted YES to amend Article V, Section 2 B, of AAWD’s Bylaws. 

     

    The new International Membership type is available to new members for the cost of $20.00 USD!

    With the revised article, there are now two separate membership types: an International Membership and an Affiliate Membership.

    International: Any licensed dentist outside the US or Canada may be elected into International Membership. Such International members may be represented in special categories or committees that are established from time to time by the Board of Directors.

    Affiliate: Any person who is supportive of the goals of the Association may be elected into Affiliate Membership. This member shall have all the privileges and responsibilities of an Active Member, except those of voting and holding office.     2021 Eleanor J. Bushee Senior Dental Student Awards Nominations Open!

    The American Association of Women Dentists presents the Eleanor J. Bushee Senior Dental Student Award each year to honor senior dental students who have achieved academic excellence and have demonstrated outstanding leadership. We have attached an Eleanor Bushee Senior Dental Student Award application. Information, guidelines, and the deadline date are listed below.

    Dr. Bushee graduated from Northwestern Dental School in 1944. After 15 years in private practice, she entered the academic world. She attained the position of Professor of Pediatric Dentistry and Orthodontics as well as Assistant Dean for Administration at Southern Illinois University of Dental Medicine. Dr. Bushee was an accomplished author and lecturer. She lived her life with verve and style. The recipient of this award should demonstrate enthusiasm in her career in dentistry and in her life as a colleague, friend and mentor.

    An advisor or dean may recommend one senior dental student from each school to student receive the award. Please allow two to three weeks from the nomination deadline for the certificate to arrive by mail. This award will be accompanied by a one-year complimentary membership in the American Association of Women Dentists.

    The deadline for return of materials is March 15, 2021. Please email materials to awards@aawd.org or fax to 850-484-8762.
